Space Zoo Patrol – Lunar Landing System

By Heather Nelson, Director, Club for the Future, Blue Origin’s nonprofit

  1. What is it called?

NASA has awarded a NextSTEP-2 Appendix P Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) contract to Blue Origin.

Under this contract, Blue Origin and its National Team partners will develop and fly both a lunar lander that can make a precision landing anywhere on the Moon’s surface and a cislunar (between the Earth and moon) transporter.

  1. What does it do?

Blue Origin and National Team partners Lockheed Martin, Draper, Boeing, Astrobotic, and Honeybee Robotics will work with NASA to build a Human Landing System to deliver NASA astronauts to the lunar surface for the agency’s Artemis V mission to the Moon planned for 2029.

  1. How does it work?

Blue Moon is a flexible lander delivering a wide variety of small, medium, and large payloads to the lunar surface. Whether cargo or crew, its capability to provide precise and soft landings will enable a sustained human presence on the Moon.

  1. What classes should I take in school to work on this?

Space is for everyone! We need lawyers, doctors, accountants, and more working in the space industry. A great way to continue learning about space is to explore STEM-related activities.
